Our Story

Since 1870

Attalla, Alabama

Long before rail lines crisscrossed the valley, the land that is now Attalla was home to Native American settlements, serving as a vital location during the Creek War. In the early 1800s, settlers began to arrive, including John Ratliffe, one of the first recorded residents. By 1819, the area had its own post office, originally called Bennettville. Over the years, the growing community became known by various names—New Town, Newton, and The Junction—before officially adopting the name “Attalla” in the early 1870s. Derived from a Cherokee word meaning “mountain” or “my home,” the name reflects the surrounding landscape and the strong sense of belonging felt here for generations.

Growth, Innovation, and Resilience
Attalla’s modern history is deeply tied to the arrival of the Wills Valley Railroad in 1870, which transformed the town into a bustling hub for trade and industry. By the 1890s, Attalla was exporting iron ore, and its downtown thrived with shops, hotels, and businesses. After devastating fires in 1887 and 1891, the town rebuilt with brick, giving rise to the historic district we see today. Attalla also holds a groundbreaking place in American history—thanks to W. P. Lay, our city became the first in the United States to be lit entirely by hydroelectric power in 1887, paving the way for the creation of Alabama Power.

Preserving Our Story
From its Native roots to its industrial rise, Attalla’s past is rich with stories of resilience, innovation, and community pride. During World War II, the surrounding area became home to Camp Siebert, a major U.S. Army training site, further cementing our city’s role in the nation’s history. Today, the Museum of Attalla exists to preserve and share these stories through carefully curated exhibits, historic photographs, and artifacts. We invite visitors of all ages to explore the moments that shaped our community and discover how our small city left a big mark on Alabama—and beyond.
